One of the main highlights of Salaam Cup 2018 was having the FA Cup at the event. This was to allow the visitors and players to have a photo taken with one of the most prestigious trophies.
Did you know….., The FA Cup is the oldest national football competition in the world? The trophy comes in three parts – the cup, a lid and base. There have been two designs of the trophy in use, but five physical trophies have been presented. The current 2014 replica, which is called The Emirates FA Cup, is handcrafted in sterling 925 silver. The eventual winners of the competition receive the FA Cup; it is only loaned to the club by the FA. Traditionally, the holders had the Cup until the following year’s presentation, however more recently the trophy has been taken on publicity tours by the FA in between finals.
The Salaam Cup organisers wanted to give this Cup a fitting tribute and respect it deserved. It was a unique opportunity. On arrival to the Salaam Cup at midday, the trophy was chaperoned by two members of the Football Association. They were met by a selected group of Salaamteers who flanked the cup on each side. Together, the FA Cup was given a guard of honour and escorted from the car park to the Fan Zone, accompanied by the famous Match of the Day tune. Crowds gathered along the route, creating a great air of excitement, as they caught a rare glimpse of this unique occasion. The FA Cup came to rest in the Fan Zone on a special staging area giving all who attended a chance to have photos with this national treasure. A memory many will never forget!
