On Sunday 2nd April, the SJFA U13 side had the opportunity to play against the London Tigers at their ground in Southall. As soon as we saw this team in training, we knew it was going to be an extremely tough match – but we were up for the challenge.
Our team had a shaky start whilst the opposition demonstrated excellent two-touch football, almost carving our defense open on several occasions. Luckily, Owais was on top form and made some brilliant saves to keep us in the game. Due to a lack of tracking back, their striker found some room to get a shot off. Owais saved the shot, but could do nothing when the opposition striker got to the rebound – we were 1-0 down. The second goal came via an SJ defensive error which left the opposition striker 1-on-1 with our keeper. The Tigers were confident now and were shooting from range. They were denied repeatedly by Owais, but one long range shot managed to get through just before the half time whistle. The half ended 4-0 to the Tigers.
Mohammed Uncle’s half-time talk really got us going and we started the second half with great energy. We were much more comfortable on the ball and it soon paid off – Zaamin and Irfaan showed some great link-up play which ended with a delightful finish from Zaamin into the bottom corner. Our midfielders and striker continued to get a lot more involved into the game, and Irfaan and Imran had several shots at goal. With some solid defending by Jawad, Ali and Muhammed, we managed to keep them from scoring for most of the half, and we nearly grabbed a second when Imran played a through-ball to Zaamin, who hit the post. Unfortunately, the Tigers grabbed two late goals, which flattened the score line, but overall we played very well throughout this half and energy levels stayed high despite the heat.
Full time: London Tigers 6-1 SJFA U13
This was a very enjoyable game for our team and we learned a lot from playing these opponents.
