The format of this friendly encounter was structured as two 15 min and one 25 min matches/playing time (7 aside).

Match 1
SJFA started brightly, pressuring Belmont’s defence and creating a number of chances. The boys displayed the much talked about “gegenpressing” tactic, which has been used successfully by Liverpool FC in the Premiership. The high pressing tactic resulted in two quick goals for SJFA. The scorers were Adam and Deen, both scoring from low drives to beat the keeper. Belmont did not see much of SJFA’s goal in this period. The few counter attacking instances were well covered by good defending and goalkeeping (Aamar, Ahmed and Mohammad Mahdi).

Match 2
SJFA continued with high pressing performance, Asad and Hossein showed good hassling and tackling of Belmont players in the middle of the park. Belmont however managed to score a goal from a defensive mix up. SJFA’s response was quick, with an excellent goal from Ahmed, the goal came after a solo run starting in his own half, Adam added another fine goal to increase SJFA lead (and scoring his second of the morning). SJFA continued to dominate the game, Uzayr hit the woodwork and Rayyan’s shot was saved by the goal keeper. In SJFA’s goal Aamar produced a good save to maintain the score line.

Match 3
After dominating displays in the first two periods SJFA showed signs of tiredness, this opened up the game for Belmont, they went one up in this final period from a nice strike taken from outside the box. SJFA however managed to restore the advantage in a counter attacking; the scorer was Deen (scoring his second of the morning). In this last period, SJFA showed excellent defensive ability/skills, there were near goal line clearances and blocks from Uzayr and Haani, both were solid in defence. Rayyan and Mohammad Mahdi displayed good link up in midfield with Asad and Hossein. In the final minutes Belmont managed to score one more goal.

Overall score was 3-5 to SJFA

Feedback/reminders for SJFA Team & Parents

  • Encourage risk taking in football matches and practices even if they make mistakes.
  • Encourage match availability or participation. The more these kids play competitive matches the more they will develop even if they lose these matches.
  • Pre or post game discussion/chat with children should avoid discussion on winning/losing or score line rather focus should be on the level of hard work, no of tackles, tracking back, dribbling, passing, shooting, saves etc.
  • Homework: The more ball time these children have the higher will be their coordination, dribbling and composure with the ball. Coaches would encourage more ball time/touches (size 3) at home (inside/outside) and parks during free time.
